A Community Treasure in Rancho Peñasquitos: Supporting Canyonside Equestrian Center
Recently, I had the opportunity to visit Canyonside Equestrian Center alongside a few of my fellow Rancho Peñasquitos town council representatives. Our goal was simple to learn more about what they do, why they do it, and how deeply their work impacts our community. What we found was something truly special: a nonprofit rooted in compassion, healing, and a deep love for both people and horses, right here in Rancho Peñasquitos.
Who is Canyonside Equestrian Center?
Canyonside Equestrian Center operates as a nonprofit organization on City of San Diego land, leasing and caring for a historic ranch that dates back to the early 1900s. Unlike many facilities, every dollar raised goes directly back into maintaining and improving the ranch; none of the operators take a salary. The property itself includes historic adobe buildings, multiple riding arenas, access to miles of regional trails, and space for up to 100 horses. Maintaining this land is no small task, especially given its location in a floodplain and the ongoing need for repairs, renovations, and safety upgrades.
The Mission: What does Canyonside Equestrian Center do?
One of the most impactful parts of Canyonside’s mission is its Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) program. This program partners with organizations throughout San Diego County to serve people who may not otherwise have access to horses, children, adults, seniors, and individuals who have experienced trauma or loss. Horses have an incredible ability to connect and calm, and simply being in their presence can be deeply therapeutic. Canyonside has already worked with groups such as Elizabeth Hospice, Sharp HealthCare, the Escondido Education Compact, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and senior organizations. Many participants include students from the juvenile justice system, grieving families, and others navigating challenging life circumstances.
The Ask: What does Canyonside Equestrian Center need?
The challenge is that many of the organizations Canyonside serves cannot afford the cost of these programs, even though the fees are already kept as low as possible, typically around $100 per person. Scholarships and donated funds help bridge that gap, allowing the center to continue offering healing experiences to those who need them most. In addition to programming, Canyonside relies on community support to fund infrastructure projects replacing decades-old tack sheds, renovating barns and outbuildings, protecting equipment from the elements, and maintaining safe spaces for horses and visitors alike.
What can you do to support Canyonside Equestrian Center?
What stood out most during our visit was the passion behind the work. The volunteers, board members, and barn staff are deeply committed not just to horses, but to the people they serve. This isn’t just an equestrian facility; it’s a place where healing happens, where history is preserved, and where the Rancho Peñasquitos community comes together in meaningful ways.
Canyonside Equestrian Center is a reminder of what makes living in Rancho Peñasquitos so special: neighbors showing up, preserving what matters, and creating spaces that support the well-being of others. Whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading the word, there are many ways to get involved and support this incredible local nonprofit. When we invest in places like Canyonside, we’re investing in the heart of our community.
